Best Tip To Be Productive - Forget Multitasking

Productivity, Business 3 Comments »

You all might think I’m nuts for writing this post as everyone thinks that multitasking is the best gift anyone can have. People brag about multitasking at interviews for business jobs. People brag about doing 1 million things at a time. Yes, multitasking is a great asset to possess in certain instances but it’s not what’s going to make or break your day. If you want to be the most productive you can be, DON’T MULTITASK. Yes, you heard me…no multitasking.

How Should You Be Productive If You Don’t Multitask?

Focus on your number one important task first. Put all of your focus into this one task until it’s done. Don’t try and do 100 other things while your working on this one task. It will only dilute the quality of your work and it will take much longer to complete the task. Each and every morning, start out with the most important thing and work on that ONLY until you feel your tackled what is necessary for the day.

If you are a sales, marketing or business person, you should be focusing on the things that make you money first and foremost. Don’t worry about the secondary things until you have put in time every morning working on the tasks that can directly make you money. When you multitask, you can easily get sidetracked and fall off of the productivity wagon. To keep on track, only focus on ONE thing at a time. And make sure this one thing directly relates to more money or assets.

Try this out for a month and see how this directly reflects on your productivity and earnings. You might just stop bragging about your multitasking abilities and switch over to singletasking!

How Do You Balance Your Life?

Productivity, Lifestyle 1 Comment »

Right now, I think I might have the most going on that I’ve ever had in my life. I’m getting married. My grandpa just passed away so we had the funeral a few days ago. My annual review is coming up at work. Did I mention I’m getting married? We have a honeymoon coming up to Lake Como, Italy. My soon to be wife and I are planning to have kids soon. I work on Internet marketing side projects on top of my full time job. I sit in traffic for about 2-3 hours per day. I’m trying to pay down some debt. I think about raising a family every single day and how I can do a good job.

To some this might not seem like a whole lot going on but for me it’s a handful right now. Wendi, my fiance, makes fun of me sometimes and says, “How can you be stressed? You have it easy.” I’m a teacher and have to stand all day long and you get to sit at a desk. What she doesn’t realize is that I am constantly thinking about how I can provide the best lifestyle for her and a family someday soon. I don’t want to waste all of my time working a 40 hour a week job and spending most of my time with people I really don’t care about. I want to spend it with her and my family, when I want and where I want. Anyway…enough ranting for now!

I guess it’s just the fact that we all feel overwhelmed at some point or another and this is it for me. I’m by no means stressed to the max but I feel that a bunch of things are coming up all at the same time. When our schedules get like this, we need to balance things out so the chaos doesn’t drive us insane. Everyone has their own way of putting their life in order and some do it better than others. I really don’t have a set method and many of these things I’ve described above I have no control over such as traffic, my grandpa’s death and how my annual review will pan out. These are everyday occurrences that happen whether we want them to or not…it’s part of life.

Some of the things, however, can be balanced out such as planning a wedding, reducing debt and related lifestyle issues. When these busy times in our lives arise, it’s much better to be prepared for whatever comes our way. I’m trying to be better prepared for these life hurdles. Wendi is a HUGE planner and I am a HUGE procrastinator. I don’t think either are the way to go. Somewhere right in the middle is probably the key. If I had to lean towards one though…it would be the HUGE planner. At least they are prepared while I’m sitting there last minute trying to scrounge something up!

There is really no rhythm or reason to this post other than sending the message that things get crazy sometimes and it’s a good idea to find a balancing routine to help you get through the waves.

Make $100 an Hour Cleaning Your Own House

Personal Finance, Productivity 3 Comments »

I bet you never thought you could clean your own house and get paid for it! Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s VERY easy. My fiance and I spent about one hour last night and about one hour this morning and we made $215. How did we do it you ask? We had a garage sale.

It’s once again spring time and it’s time to clean out the clutter from last year and make some more room for this years purchases, gifts and other junk you accumulate throughout the year. You don’t even realize how much stuff you have built up over the year until you actually start gathering things for a garage sale.

I’ll give you some tips on how you can hold a successful garage sale:

  1. Don’t hold onto stuff that you have not used in the past year unless it is extremely sentimental. If you haven’t needed it for anything in the past year, it’s highly likely that you will not need it in the year to come. Put a price tag on it and get rid of it.
  2. There are garage sale junkies. They do know how to haggle and they WILL haggle. You must learn to haggle back and hold strong on your prices. Learn to negotiate with them. If you have an item for sale at $10 and they offer $5, don’t take their offer. Ask for $9. They they will likely come back with an offer of $6 or $7. You say $8 and it’s all yours. Garage salers are a thrifty bunch so they will do what they can to get an item at it’s lowest value. So, brush up on your negotiating skills before you throw up that “Garage Sale” sign.
  3. If a little boy or girl finds something they like such as a doll or toy, just give it to them for free. It will make their day, and really, giving away a little toy is not going to make or break your garage sale. It’s fun to make kids happy for such a simple thing.
  4. After someone buys something and if it’s a heavier or larger item, help them bring it to their car or truck. They will appreciate it and it’s just a nice gesture.
  5. Make sure you have plenty of single dollar bills and change as people will not always be prepared with exact amounts of money. Many items will be priced very low so quarters and dollars are essential.
  6. Offer them coffee or water. This takes so little time to prepare and this might keep them shopping a bit longer until they find the impulse to buy that golf club or slow cooker.
  7. When the sale is coming to an end and all of the “junk” items are left, put a sign up offering them for free. This will save you the hassle of having to find a place to get rid of everything.
  8. Last but not least…just have fun. It’s only a garage sale. You will make some money and clear up the clutter in your house at the same time.

Happy Garage Saling!!!

Best Way To Lift Your Spirits: Do Something Productive Today!

We all get into ruts where we feel down or maybe just not our usual self. This happens to the best of us and is totally normal. There is a common cure for feeling down and out of touch with reality and it might be much easier than you think.

DO SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE!

It’s as simple as that. Most people get stressed out and feel sad or down because they are overwhelmed with their life. Get out a pad of paper, write down what you need to accomplish, and just get it done. Don’t make excuses for yourself and don’t blow things off. There comes a point when something needs to get done and knocked off of the list of “To-Do’s” and the only way to shrink that list is to do it!

I am at fault just like the next person when it comes to getting stressed about having too many things on my mind but I can say that when I do have a productive day or an entire productive weekend, I feel SO much better.

My fiance Wendi and I were just talking about this today. We had a great weekend together, got quite a bit done and feel so much better about everything than if we would have just lounged around all weekend and woke up Monday morning with th same list of “To-Do’s”!

So, if you are on the couch, laying there, contemplating on doing something productive today…..get off your lazy ass and do something. You will feel much better tomorrow morning and you will start the week off on a good note.

Tips To Make Your Day More Productive

Getting ahead is hard work with all of the distractions in our everyday lives. It seems like we make a list of things to do and as we scratch one off the list, we add 3 more! How can we ever get caught up to a point where our lives don’t seem like total chaos? Chances are there will always be a little bit of craziness to life but these following tips can help you get through your day and feel a little more accomplished.

Don’t plan meetings that are not needed. I cannot tell you how many meetings at work I’ve been to in the past year that were an utter waste of my time and most of these lasted at least an hour if not 2-3 hours. People like to talk and when you get a bunch of people in a room, this will take up your day. Everyone wants to get there say. Most meetings can be solved by a few simple emails instead of planning an hour or two to go over things. Only set up meetings when they are absolutely necessary. Figure out all of the minor details before the meeting through email that way time doesn’t have to be wasted during the meeting and everyone can actually talk about the core subject.

Check your email as often as you feel you need to. Some productivity books tell you to check your email first thing in the morning and then at the end of the day. If you are in a profession like mine (web marketing), you will be out of business. Email is my lifeline and if I don’t check it every hour, I would get so backed up that I would loose focus on other things. So, take your emails as you get them and respond when you feel necessary.

Commute earlier or later for work. This is one that I have to improve on personally. Right now, I have a 38 mile commute and it takes me anywhere from 1-2 hours each way to get to work and home. So, think about it. This is 2-4 hours in the car each and every workday. This is equivalent to spending 21-43 days in the car each and every year and this is just driving to and from work. Imagine sitting in your car for 21-43 days straight! Talk about going cooky! Getting up earlier and beating the rush hour is one option if you can get into a routine. Or you could work out a plan with your employer to work from home for a few hours each morning and then take a late morning commute to avoid the traffic. Best case scenario: get a telecommuting gig or start your own business. The good ole’ American dream!

Make a “to do” list. This sounds simple enough but how many people actually do it? Not many! You can go the Blackberry route and program your list into your phone or you can do it the old fashion way (with pen and paper) and write it down and cross off something when you complete it. Be realistic with your list. If you put 100 things on it for the day, you are setting yourself up for failure. Prioritize your tasks and do the essentials first.

Some people are so detailed that they even add “showering” or “brush teeth” to their list. If this is you, then you have more than productivity problems!! Only kidding!

Last but not least…take time for yourself. It’s proven that if you are well rested, you are more productive. It’s also true that people can run on little sleep but this will eventually catch up with them. Get enough rest…at least 6-8 hours a night and stick to that routine. Take time to enjoy your family too. Take vacations. Go to a nice dinner. Treat yourself to a massage. Just do something for yourself to relieve stress.

Okay…try these out for a few weeks and see if they help. Everyone will find their own little ways to be more productive. Figure out your schedule and create a routine that is doable. In the end you will be happier, feel better and be more productive…which is what we all want, right?
